Liposuction for Body Shaping & Fat Removal
Are you furious with fat that refuses to go away no matter how many salads you eat or trips to the gym you make? Would that bikini, fitted T or tight jeans look much better without fat bulges ruining the look? If this is you, then liposuction may be the body contouring procedure that best meets your needs. Liposuction is made for people who want to get rid of pockets of fat from their thighs, hips, stomach and other areas that hold onto it despite healthy diet and exercise habits.

Liposuction Techniques Offered at Grove Plastic
All of the liposuction procedures offered at Grove Plastic in Coconut Grove remove fat deposits from the body by first destroying the fat cells in the area and then removing the excess fat through vacuum suction. To accomplish this, we offer our patients the choice of several different liposuction techniques, including the following:
This liposuction technique involves the injection of a local anesthetic fluid into the treatment area. The fluid will make the fat swell so that it can then be removed with ease, precision and less bleeding.
Ultrasonic liposuction (Vaser liposuction)
Ultrasonic, or Vaser, liposuction uses ultrasound waves to destroy fat cells, liquefying them so that they can then be easily removed.
Mechanically assisted liposuction
Mechanically assisted liposuction, also known as Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL), combines the tumescent liposuction technique with the use of tiny mechanically powered cannulas (the thin, hollow tubes used to suction out fat).
Laser liposuction (Smartlipo)
Laser liposuction, or Smartlipo, uses a laser beam to liquefy fat cells in the treatment area so that they can then be suctioned out.
Ask your Grove Plastic surgeon which liposuction procedure might be the best option for your particular case.
Is Liposuction Right for You?
Thinking about saying goodbye to your pooch or love handles for good? Though candidacy can only be accurately determined by a consultation with one of our surgeons, you might be considered a good liposuction candidate if you:
- Wish to get rid of stubborn fat bulges on your stomach, thighs and other areas
- Are generally healthy, with no serious medical conditions
- Are within 20 percent of your ideal weight, or are at a weight where you feel comfortable
- Have maintained a stable weight for several months
- Have firm, elastic skin
Liposuction is NOT for you if you:
- Are significantly overweight
- Are looking at liposuction as weight loss surgery
- Have excess, loose skin on your body (as a skin tightening procedure might be better for you in this case)
- Have medical conditions that involve bleeding problems
- Use medication that increases your risk of bleeding (such as anticoagulants)
- Are pregnant or lactating
Some Details about the Liposuction Procedure
Some liposuction procedures will use a general anesthesia (so that the patient is asleep during treatment) along with a local anesthetic on the treatment area in order to numb it so that there is minimal discomfort afterwards. Smaller procedures may only use a local anesthetic. During a tumescent liposuction treatment, the surgeon will inject a large amount of anesthetic fluid into the treatment area. Tiny incisions will then be made around the area, in order to insert the ultrasonic or laser probe (used in Vaser or Smartlipo to break up fat cells), and then the cannula to suction the fat out. Once the process is complete, the incisions are closed with sutures. Each area of liposuction typically uses two to three very small incision sites hidden in areas that are hard to see.
Recovering from Your Liposuction Procedure
Following your surgery, your surgeon will place you in a compression garment to assist with swelling and to protect the incisions as they heal. You will need to wear the garments for four to six weeks after surgery. Most patients like to wear them as it is more comfortable to have them on. This first support garment is designed so that you can go to the bathroom without having to take it off. You can also shower with it on, and gently pat it dry or use a blow dryer on it afterward. After several days, your body will be healed enough to where you will be able to take the garment on and off when needed. After several weeks, your surgeon will switch you to a lighter support garment, such as Spanx™.
To promote circulation and help your body to heal, we recommend that you start walking around as early as the day after your procedure. This will also help bring the swelling down. You will be prescribed pain medication to help with any discomfort you may experience during recovery. You will be able to drive about a week after surgery, but will need to stop taking your pain medication in order to do so. You should be sufficiently healed enough to return to office work about a week after your surgery, and you can return to light exercise after two weeks.
The results of your procedure are noticeable immediately after surgery, as you will instantly experience a slimmer, smoother body contour (though there will still be swelling). These results will become gradually more noticeable over time as the swelling resolves and as your clothes will fit and look better on you. You can expect to enjoy the final results about three to six months after surgery. Exercise and diet are very important after liposuction, as you have to remember that this procedure will not change your metabolism. Remember that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure and will only correct problem areas. An ongoing diet and exercise program is very important to ensure that you maintain the results of your liposuction procedure.
