Can You Benefit from Male Breast Reduction?
Gynecomastia is a common problem for men, and may be caused by obesity, hormone changes, the use of certain prescriptions medications and steroids as well as other factors. If you eat right, work out regularly, but still have extra fat on your chest, you may wish to consider male breast reduction surgery. To help determine if you are a good candidate for surgery, schedule a personal consultation with one of our surgeons at Grove Plastic in Miami, and they can assess your medical history and discuss your goals for the procedure. You might be considered a good candidate if you:
- Are embarrassed by a fleshy, more feminine-looking chest
- Are in good health and have no serious medical concerns
- Are at or close to a healthy weight
- Have good skin elasticity
What to Expect from the Male Breast Reduction Procedure
Male breast reduction surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and takes one to two hours to complete. During the procedure, the surgeon will remove excess breast tissue and fat and tighten the overlying skin. This is typically performed through a small incision at the base of the nipple, which heals very well. Sutures are used to close the incisions. Depending on the amount of tissue that needs to be removed, some patients will also need small drains placed in each breast for the removal of excess fluids; these drains are easy to take care of and will be removed by the surgeon a day or two after surgery.
Male Breast Reduction Recovery
It is normal to have a moderate amount of swelling and bruising of the chest following your procedure. These symptoms will dissipate completely after two to three weeks. Any discomfort you might have can be easily managed with pain medication prescribed by your surgeon, and you should get as much rest as possible during this time.
Most patients are able to return to work a week after their surgery, though it may be two or more weeks if you have a more physically demanding job. Moderate exercise, not including chest or back exercises, can resume after two weeks. Lifting weights or exercises that put pressure on the chest and back should be avoided for at least four to six weeks.
Your chest should be protected from the sun, and also tanning beds, for at least six weeks, so that scars will not become darkly pigmented. After the first six weeks, apply a sunblock with an SPF of at least 30 when in the sun for an additional six months or more, and avoid tanning beds.
